5 Cursor Features That Will Save Your Time Every Day
If you wanted Cursor slash commands, that list is the commands pillar: /ship, /fix, /launch, and the rest. This post is a short feature tour.
Cursor has fundamentally transformed software development by integrating deep AI capabilities directly into the editor workflow. Rather than treating AI as a disconnected chatbot in a separate browser tab, Cursor weaves intelligence directly into your file trees, terminal commands, and multi-file diffs.
1. Inline Prompting with Cmd + K / Ctrl + K
Inline generation allows you to highlight any block of code and press Cmd + K to refactor, write tests, or generate missing error handling in place. By providing precise context, Cursor edits only the targeted lines with zero unnecessary token consumption.
2. Autonomous Agent Mode (Composer)
Cursor's Agent mode (Composer) can read multiple files simultaneously, plan multi-step edits, execute shell commands, and verify test outputs autonomously. That harness is not the same as a named Cursor agent like tech-lead. The product runs the session. The brief tells it which desk to sit at.
3. Deep Codebase Indexing (RAG)
Using local embeddings and semantic vector retrieval, Cursor indexes your entire repository. Asking questions with @Codebase retrieves exact method signatures, database schemas, and architectural patterns across hundreds of source files.
4. Custom System Rules (.cursorrules and CURSOR.md)
Defining explicit project rules in .cursorrules or a central CURSOR.md file forces the AI to follow your preferred coding style, TypeScript conventions, error codes, and library versions consistently across every turn. Rules are not Cursor skills. See Cursor rules vs skills and the production rules setup.
5. Automated Slash Workflows (/ship, /build-api)
By equipping your workspace with specialized slash commands, you trigger complete pipelines, from API routes to Playwright suites, with one /. Start at the Cursor commands directory. The field guide is 35 commands I actually use. /ship is the hero. /build-api is the narrower tool.
